It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years—yes, twenty—since Corey Woods, better known as Raekwon The Chef, followed up the fiery success of his legendary hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan with the release of his inaugural solo album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Also known as The Purple Tapes (as the album, born in the cassette era on the verge of a compact disc revolution, was exactly that), the record featured other member of the Wu-Tang and sparked a feeding frenzy of sorts for his beatsy, gritty rhymes and—after immortalizing the Polo Ralph Lauren “Snow Beach” jacket in the 1994 Wu-Tang video “Can It Be All So Simple”—his fashion swagger.
